Rattan

Rattan is a durable, natural material with many furniture applications.
To ensure its longevity it must be treated with care, particularly if it has a painted finish.

General Care

  • Brush regularly with a dry, soft-bristled brush to remove dirt and dusty build up between the reed strands.
  • Clean spills immediately. Spot clean using a clean, damp cloth and mild detergent. Use a dry soft cloth to remove residue & blot dry. Take care not to apply too much water during cleaning as this will cause the rattan to become limp. Rattan will resume its size and shape when it dries, but too much water may permanently distort its shape.
  • Avoid exposure to excess heat or heated objects.
  • Avoid exposure to direct sunlight as this can cause rattan to dry out and become brittle over time.
  • Sharp items such as pens and keys should be removed from pockets and not come in contact with rattan. Contact with sharp or abrasive objects can cause damage to the fibres and chipping/peeling of the painted finish.
  • Minor chipping or fading of stained or painted rattan can be touched up with a similar coloured stain-pen.
  • Unless specifically mentioned, rattan is not suitable for outdoor use.

Important Considerations

  • Speak with your Designer to ensure the products selected are suitable for your specific environment as well as discuss the level of maintenance that will be needed.
  • Rattan is a natural fibre and minor freying on the strands is a natural and expected characteristic of this material.
