BuildHer Collective | Rathmines Project
Located in Melbourne’s leafy northern suburbs, BuildHer Collective’s Rebeka Morgan and 7 DevelopHer’s joined forces, to push the traditional boundaries of property development by creating two architecturally unique homes.
Both North House and South House demonstrate the perfect balance of luxury living and sustainable design with Ben Callery Architects at the helm of both builds. North House exudes warmth, with a nod to a relaxing lifestyle, it’s abundance of natural light and natural materials are woven throughout. South House features a more moody and slightly masculine aesthetic while both homes emphasise the importance of family functionality.
With expertise from Alison Lewis Interiors and the BuildHer team, South House was furnished and styled with GlobeWest furniture throughout. We caught up with Rebeka Morgan, Co-Founder of BuildHer and the team to learn more about the Rathmines Project below.

Tell us a bit about BuildHer Collective, as it is now, and your business journey.'
BuildHer Collective was created to help women renovate and build their own homes. It quickly grew into the arena of helping women design their lives and renovate for profit as we could see the passion to do this was embedded within our community.
Now we support BuildHer’s who are trying to build the best home they can within their budget and DevelopHer’s who are looking to build a lifestyle around property.
Tell us a bit about the Rathmines Project
As part of our DevelopHer’s program, we could see that sometimes it is nice to cut your teeth on development by sharing the journey. So, we created a Joint Venture (JV) where eight BuildHer’s came together to build two lovely homes, each with an important role to play in the development.
What’s your process when it comes to deciding on the design & layout?
BuildHer works with the incredible team at Ben Callery Architects and this team understands the importance of family life and sustainable design when creating the layout of our projects. We are lucky enough to have Rebeka from the BuildHer team, Alison Lewis from Alison Lewis Interior Design, and Rachel Collard from Co.Kitchens on the team. These powerhouse women are able to come together and work with the Architects, leading the interiors and the build.

What’s your advice for people setting out on their renovation and interior journey?
Know the process from the outset, before you engage a designer or before you hire an architect, know that you are the only person who will be able to make your renovation come to life. You will be steering it and guiding it – this is an incredible gift, but you also need to have the plan and directions at hand.
What did you enjoy working on the most during the renovation?
We love building and seeing houses come together! It has been so much fun to share this journey with seven other women. We worked closely with John from Beirin Projects on-site to create the beautiful spaces we had envisioned.
Whilst the process of building is amazing, there is nothing like the reward of moving the furniture into place and seeing the space come to life. So often people finish the build and don’t invest the time and energy to get the furnishing right from the outset! Choosing the right furniture and homewares can transform a house into a home.
What informed the selection of furniture, art, fittings, and finishes?
Alison and Rebeka worked on the furnishings and stylings. We have loved working with GlobeWest on our projects because they have such a large range of diverse and beautiful products that we can use to style and shoot a space.
It was so hard to land on the final product choice for this space, as we were so spoilt for choice with GlobeWest’s product range!

How would you describe the South House Interior?
The South House has a cooler interior, featuring darker timbers, rich leather and the striking Cote De’zur from Signorino Stone have been heroes in the kitchen, laundry, and bathrooms. The South House is a spacious family home, but one with elegance and poise.
What are some of your favourite elements of the home?
The team has so much love for all our suppliers, and we adore the finishes in this home! From the Cote D’Azur stone on the island bench from Signorino Tile and Stone Gallery, the Woodcut Herringbone floorboards in Thistle, the crazy pavers from RMS Traders in London Grey, the carpet from Godfrey Hirst, Salisbury, Neolithic, and the Scandia Helix fireplace in the sunken lounge room.
What’s your favourite GlobeWest piece in South House and why?
There are a few favourites amongst the team, we will not lie. Rebeka’s favourite is the Aperto Ali Round Coffee Table and Lyon Outdoor Sofas, which are on her wishlist – she’s already envisioned these pieces in her own home. Alison loves the Merlot Artie Wave Side Table that has been styled in the kids bedroom (we painted the wall lilac with this piece in mind), and Rachel is a massive fan of the Turner Bar Stools, which even the painters have their eyes on!

What’s your favourite GlobeWest piece in North House and why?
Picking just one GlobeWest piece is never easy, the diverse range makes it incredibly easy to select pieces that fit perfectly into the look and feel of the home. If I were to pick a few, the Benjamin Ripple Oval Dining Table is a standout piece, the colour alone gives it a uniqueness that is not often seen in dining tables. Add to that the Natadora Archive 3 Seater Sofa and the Hugo Bow Occasional Chair in cinnamon velvet and we’ve been able to use furniture to enhance the overall warmth and bring a new layer of depth and texture to the space.
What are some of your favourite elements of the home?
Ben Callery Architects has once again created an environmentally conscious home designed to maximise light and views. Customised polished concrete floors create a beautiful base leading you through the home and they set the tone for the warmth that you can expect through all the other rooms. A warm and calming palette has been used throughout with textures creating subtle differences and elegance. There is a softness to the colour palette and material selection with the sunken lounge adding to the sophistication of the space.

What’s your favourite space in the house?
The sunken lounge is one of our favourites, as is the large outdoor entertaining area! It is nice to be able to play with spaces and zones, and to create something that we haven’t ever done before. We love working with open plan living, and playing with different levels in the home, it can really add dimension to a space.
