At Home with Jacqui Felgate
We caught up with Australian TV and radio presenter, Jacqui Felgate, to explore the inspiration behind her beautifully styled farm on the Mornington Peninsula and how, with her selection of GlobeWest furniture, she’s created a relaxed yet refined retreat that perfectly reflects her coastal-country lifestyle.
What drew you to the Mornington Peninsula, and what ultimately inspired you to make it home?
We bid on a number of homes in Melbourne and on the Peninsula over four years and were unsuccessful every time! We hadn’t planned on buying a farm but we just fell in love with the feel of the property. It’s like being on holiday every day…although the home is totally off the grid, so it has been a real learning experience! Most of the time we feel like we are living in the TV series Clarkson’s Farm…but we love it and wouldn’t change a thing…. except the traffic on the Monash Freeway!
What was your vision for the space when you first began the styling journey?
I wanted to bring the outside in. We have a really lovely outlook with lots of trees and paddocks and I hope the house is an extension of that. We also have a young family, a kelpie and some of the neighbour’s cows, so we needed a practical space that we could live in without worrying about breaking or staining anything!
What is your favourite room in your home and why?
The living space is my favourite room. It is centred by a Cheminees Philippe fireplace that opens from both sides, which is the heart of the home. I had an artwork commissioned by Emma Itzstein of the property and I think it has brought everything together really well. The room has floor to ceiling windows and I love sitting on the lounge (when I have the time) and watching the birds and the local mob of kangaroos with a cup of tea, or glass of wine!
What is your favourite GlobeWest piece in the house?
The Sidney Slouch Modular Sofa is just so cozy and comfortable. The ottoman is great because it can extend the couch or we can use it as a seat when friends come over, which is very practical and also looks great! Cat from Arch Melbourne recommended this for me and it’s also a really durable piece, with kids they tend to trash everything and the material is super hard wearing.
How would you describe the style of the house?
It’s a black New Zealand style barn. I don’t like clutter but I still wanted the home to have a cozy and warm feel and I hope that we have achieved that. It has a pitched roof and exposed beams which I also love.
Have you enjoyed the process of curating and styling the interiors?
I actually felt quite overwhelmed when I began the process. Not having much idea about interiors I asked a lot of great people for advice and everyone was so helpful. I get so nervous with selecting furniture and making sure it is the right size for the space. Fortunately, Cat and the team at GlobeWest were really key to helping me narrow down my selections and making sure they were still my style but also worked well inside the home.
What do you love most about life on the Peninsula?
The isolation! I have a crazy busy life and when I drive off the freeway and look out at the rolling hills I instantly feel better. It’s my happy place. We love the wineries and the food scene and we have already made so many friends. It was my dream to have my children grow up in the country. We have three horses that live nearby and we are generally there riding five days a week. That’s when I feel most at peace.
What’s next for the property? Are there any future projects or finishing touches on the horizon?
We are working with the amazing landscape architect Nathan Burkett to bring the garden to life. The team has the most wonderful vision for the farm. I can’t wait to see it all come together in the next 12 months.
