Designer In Profile | Little White Label

Aug 06, 2024

Little White Label is a Brisbane-based design duo made up of Jess and Elisha, that offers accessible interior design and decoration with a focus on residential projects. They came together with a like minded passion (bordering on obsession) for interiors and the influence a curated interior has on everyday life.

Meet Jess and Elisha:

Jess is starry eyed for high street items and has a love of curating spaces that feature sentimental elements in a contemporary surrounding.

Elisha has an insatiable need to refine interior spaces until it evokes a sense of calm and harmonious balance, where every detail contributes to an atmosphere you never want to leave.

Together we bring a unique blend of backgrounds, experiences and artistic visions and apply this to renovations, new builds, and interior styling, from the Sunshine Coast through to Byron Bay and servicing e-design nationally.

When did you first develop an interest in interior design and how did you start your business?

We both had a passion and interest from an early age. Jess would spend hours building LEGO homes and cities, and Elisha said her fondest memories were redecorating her bedroom with her mum. It wasn’t until a little later in life where we both realised creating spaces could be a real job!

Through meeting in the industry we decided to embark on our own journey together and have been growing Little White Label ever since, backed by a combined 20 years of industry experience, but forever learning and evolving.

Describe your business’ style and customer:

Little White Label celebrates contemporary living with layers of organic textures, and a calming and well-balanced colour palette. We have a penchant for creating spaces that harmonise functionality with beauty in an approachable manner, and that ultimately reflect the personality and aspirations of our clients.

Our portfolio showcases a diverse range of projects that highlight our versatility and commitment to each individual client. They typically range from end-to-end interior decoration through to build and material specification, floorplan analysis, and colour consultations.

We recognise that interior design is such a personal concept; having our clients open their doors to us and inviting us into their homes to help create their dream interiors is a privilege. It is our commitment to provide them with honest, friendly advice and with a simple and stress-free process. We have been extremely lucky to have worked with some beautiful people along the way!

What’s your favourite GlobeWest collection and why?

There are a number of pieces currently in a stunning Matt Ocean Marble, which we’ve recently secured for a couple of current projects. The way this finish plays with light and dark makes this collection the perfect addition, and is a sure-fire way of elevating any space.

What’s your go-to interior piece?

A well-chosen rug can have a profound impact on the overall look and feel of a space, acting as both a practical and aesthetic element of design. It anchors and defines a space, adding texture, depth, colour, pattern, and warmth. In a practical sense, a rug provides extra comfort and also helps with sound absorption - a big plus for Queenslander homes or apartment living!

We are loving the detail in the Tepih Hobson Rug. The cross-hatch pattern adds visual interest and extra dimension, which would work a treat in a contemporary home.

What are your top three styling tips to create a contemporary aesthetic in your home?

  1. Contemporary interiors are ever-evolving, and because of this, we love to create neutral bases that can be layered with a range of trend-forward elements in conjunction with sentimental pieces. The neutral “investment” pieces will move through trends and last a lifetime, allowing for the current trending pieces to occupy your smaller and more replaceable items, such as cushions and homewares.
  2. Nailing scale is an important element when creating a contemporary aesthetic, with a less-is-more approach. We would opt for larger, more intentional pieces, over a small cluster of items.
  3. Our take on contemporary interiors is a soulful one. You can maintain a pared back interior that is still warm and inviting by layering textures, and adding organic elements like timber, natural stone and linen-based soft furnishings. We love introducing interesting pieces that have an artistic or artisanal quality.

What does a typical day look like at Little White Label?

No day is the same! Our daily tasks can range from consultations, on-going client communication, sourcing, site visits, checking in with trades and suppliers, coffee, conceptual drawings, social media, daily administration, more coffee, and accounting - we wear all the hats here!

We take our work seriously, but we don’t like to take ourselves too seriously, and that is in the heart of our business. There’s not a day that goes by without laughter and quizzing each other on our personal renovations (because our husbands don’t want to listen anymore!).

What’s your creative process?

Our flexible approach means that clients can engage us at any stage: whether they’re about to move, have a blank slate and need a house full of furniture; if they’re in renovation planning mode; or maybe they’re half-way through a build and just need some last-minute advice. No matter the type of brief, it always starts the same way: by listening to our clients’ wants and needs. We discover their personal style and translate this into their ideal inspiration. From this visual communicative tool, we then play with the balance of scale, textures and colour to transform our clients’ space and bring them to life.

What’s your dream project?

We’re both avid lovers of travel, so anything that takes us to places far and wide - where we can be further influenced by culture and different perspectives - would be a dream. We would love to have a destination holiday rental. Picture this: somewhere somewhat isolated, surrounded by greenery, view of the coastline and mountains, white walls, sky-high ceilings, flooded natural light, wood burning fireplace, a healthy-sized wine collection and plush sink-in seating where you can chat for hours on end. Watch this space for availabilities coming soon haha!

What’s next for Little White Label Interiors?

Interior design is an innate passion of ours - it’s something we live and breathe, and never grow tired of. We’re always exploring and strive to push ourselves creatively with any brief that hits our desk.

Our ultimate goal with Little White Label is for work-life balance, so something like our dream project (above) would fulfil us personally and professionally.
