Designer In Profile | Create Interiors
Create Interiors was born from prestige property styling company, Create Expectations.
Create Expectations began at the fore front of property styling in Melbourne in 1997 and has developed a position in the high end property market, working with Melbournes leading agents and developers. Focusing on a highly curated and bespoke style, Create Expectations embodies luxury property styling with a focus on sophistication, innovation, and precision.
This commitment to quality naturally led to the opening of our own Interior Design Studio, where we can create beautiful, personalized spaces for our clients’ forever homes and expand our design philosophy into a wider range of offerings.
What’s your professional background and how has it influenced your work today?
I’ve spent nearly 20 years in the property styling industry, collaborating on some of Melbourne's most beautiful interiors and prestigious homes alongside my business partner and mother, Kim Hallis. From a young age, I remember our home being a constant source of pride for Mum, who always ensured it was stylish and beautifully curated. After moving from England to Australia in 1985, she developed a distinctive aesthetic that blended antique treasures with contemporary art and bold patterned fabrics. Our home had a curated, collected feel that was uniquely hers.
When I was about eight, Mum designed my entire bedroom using a floral Laura Ashley fabric with yellow striped wallpaper. It even featured in Home Beautiful magazine at the time! Her evolving style has always been a huge influence on me. Growing up, we travelled often, and I was always drawn to the different styles and new places we visited. I developed a passion for hotel lobbies and gallery hopping, fascinated by the eccentricity and glamour they exuded. Over time, I’ve created my own style, which still reflects the eclectic and unique sensibility my mum instilled in me.
Describe the journey and growth of Create Interiors.
Looking back on the past seven years of Create Interiors, I feel a deep sense of pride and accomplishment. We began with a focus on the core elements of interior design—furniture, window treatments, paint, carpet, and colour selection. This foundation allowed us to evolve into a full-service design studio, offering a wide range of services. Today, we’re fortunate to collaborate with a diverse array of clients, from private homeowners to commercial spaces, developers and builders, creating and transforming interiors that reflect each client’s vision.
As a team, we’ve grown together, and with that growth comes an exciting surge of creativity and collaboration. It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of something that’s evolving from a dream into a thriving reality. I often find myself sitting in the studio, watching the team in action, and feeling a quiet moment of pride and excitement for how far we’ve come.
Describe your business’ style and customer.
Create Interiors’ aesthetic is a harmonious blend of sophistication, eclecticism, and refinement. We believe in celebrating individuality through design while maintaining a sense of elegance and balance. Whether we’re designing a residential home or a commercial space, our aim is always to craft an environment that feels personal, lived-in, and elevated—one that is as visually striking as it is comfortable. This thoughtful approach ensures that each project tells a unique story, perfectly tailored to the client's tastes and lifestyle, with an enduring style that goes beyond fleeting trends.
Our clients are as diverse and eclectic as our design style, and we have the privilege of working on a wide variety of properties—from sleek contemporary homes to charming provincial estates, and everything in between. This range of projects keeps us dynamic and adaptable, allowing us to seamlessly navigate and design across a broad spectrum of styles. The most rewarding moment is at the project completion, when we walk through with our clients and we get to see the joy, excited and pride on their faces.
What’s your favourite GlobeWest piece/collection and why?
I absolutely adore the Elle Monument coffee table. Its sleek, minimalist design strikes the perfect balance between simplicity and sophistication, making it incredibly versatile for a wide range of interiors. The scale is perfect on its own, but it becomes truly striking when paired in larger spaces. I also love how Globe West continues to evolve this design with new marble and stone finishes—it keeps things fresh and exciting. In fact, I love it so much, I have one in my own home!
What’s your go-to interior piece?
Vintage décor. No matter what the budget or aesthetic, you can always find a treasure to elevate the space you are working on. Vintage finds are such a special category of decor because they carry history, character, and often a sense of discovery that newer items just can't replicate. When I think about vintage pieces in the home, I picture the thrill of stumbling upon something unique—whether it's at a flea market, an auction house, or even passed down through family. Each item has its own story, which adds layers of depth and personality to a space.
What is your top styling tip to transform a space into luxury home?
I believe layering soft furnishings, décor, books and objects is the key to creating luxury. This doesn’t mean cluttering or overstyling, but by layering textures, colours, and accessories thoughtfully you can create a space that feels both curated and luxurious. Creating glamour isn’t just about shiny expensive things—it’s about creating an environment that feels inviting, intriguing, unexpected and thoughtfully curated.
How does a typical day for you unfold?
My days are incredibly varied, thanks to the dual roles I have across both the Property Styling business and the Interior Design Studio—something I truly love. From our studio in Malvern to our warehouse in Clayton, to site visits, client presentations, product sourcing, and gathering new design insights, no two days are the same. I’m fortunate to work alongside the amazing teams at Create Interiors and Create Expectations, who constantly inspire me and make each day a little brighter. And then, when I wrap up my work, I head home to my biggest source of inspiration—Hazel, my 6-year-old, who has a surprisingly sophisticated sense of style. She often schools me on what's "cool" and what's not, which always keeps me on my toes!
What’s your creative process?
Design, for me, is fluid and a balance between artistic intuition, user-friendly thinking, and technical execution.
I think the creative process is less about following a strict formula and more about embracing curiosity, flexibility, and collaboration with my clients style and needs, working with my team to continuously challenge ourselves and provide something personal and unique. . While I rely on experience and techniques, I always try to stay open to fresh perspectives and innovative approaches. Design is a constant cycle of exploration, discovery, and refinement, and that’s what keeps it exciting and fulfilling.
What’s your dream project?
My dream project is to restore an old Victorian manor, a timeless jewel of the past, and breathe new life and purpose into it. Imagine an abandoned manor nestled amidst acres of orchards and vineyards, waiting to be transformed!!! . My vision would be to seamlessly blend contemporary design with antique elements, juxtaposing high-end designer pieces with reupholstered and reimagined furniture. The dream also involves curating a diverse art collections, utilising the tall ceilings and large halls... mixing mediums, contemporary with classic, sculptures and art installations…
I will continue to manifest this dream, you never know!
What’s next for Create Interiors?
Our team is growing, along with the scale and diversity our projects.. As we continue to evolve, our goal is to refine and elevate our aesthetic while pushing the boundaries of creativity. I’m excited to be continually inspired and challenged by my team, as we grow together creatively. I believe this collaborative spirit will result in beautiful, unique, and deeply meaningful designs for our clients.
